Choosing hospitals

The proof of the pudding is in the eating

Hoe werken we 1

Medics without Vacation provides help at the request of African hospitals. But it is only after working together the first time that we know whether a collaboration with the hospital is possible. That is why an experienced team is always sent to the new partner the first time.

They have the important job of finding out whether MWV will be able to work in the hospital. Or in our director's words: “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.”

If after the first mission both our volunteers and the local hospital say: “It is a success!” we can build a sustainable partnership. From then on we can put together teams which include new people.

Working where needed

If Medics without Vacation decides to work with a hospital, we draw up an action plan with the local management. This plan is the starting point of a long-term partnership: every year different teams visit the hospital to provide reinforcement.
MWV works in countries considered by the United Nations as least developed countries (LDC countries) which have sufficient political stability and security.

Our volunteers like adventure but have jobs and family in Belgium. They cannot leave if their security is not guaranteed. We are currently working in Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Benin, Burkina Faso en Cameroon.

Working for people who need it

Besides the location of the hospital it is also important for us to know whether:

  • a lot of poor people go there
  • there is staff that can be trained
  • there is sufficient infrastructure to work and live.

Because our missions are usually just two to three weeks in the field, the hospital also needs to be accessible within two days of travel… without our team being absolutely exhausted.
